mono office for architecture and design is a young practice based in Beijing since 2018. Its activities are not defined by a certain style or predefined narrative, as each project is taken instead as an opportunity for exploration. mono’s work features architectural arguments constructed from the combination of the finished building, and all the equally important drawings, images, intuitions and narratives that mediated each project and have a life of its own.

mono is configured as a brand that collects all kind of works related with design, being these buildings, places, strategies or objects. It has now representation in Shanghai (CN), Beijing (CN), Barcelona (SP) and Zaragoza (SP). And its work has been exhibited internationally at the White Chapel Gallery of London, the MAAT museum in Lisbon, the Graham Foundation, the Beijing Design Festival, the Forbidden City Museum and many other venues. Projects have been published in the Financial Times, The Guardian, in The New York Times, Wallpaper*, The China Daily, and the RIBA Journal amongst others.

Located at number 9 of Breton de Los Herreros in Logroño, Sala Nueve adds a series of spaces that expand the spatial and programmatic qualities of the old city theatre.

Our building speaks of its content. Theatricality is at the core its design. Inspired by scenography as an architectural language we project an abstract skin, whose dynamic character becomes a curtain in between the street and the building. The mutable characteristics of its wide openings configure an urban scenery that turns citizens into spectators of its inner life.

The hybrid Hall articulates the entire project and connects its different programmes with the city. It dignifies the access to the old theatre while granting new independent flows for each of the new spaces. The core becomes an inner facade for the auditorium. It is represented by a longitudinal piece of contrasted abstract materiality, which contains connections and programmes that require technical treatments. In between the core and the skin, we find different lobbies cut by a sculptural staircase. The rooftop holds a permeable room with connections to a big terrace for events.

Located in the heart of Beijing’s financial district at Langyuan Vintage cultural complex. The space to intervene is a 24sqm small office on the third floor of a soviet-era building. It is surrounded by iconic skyscrapers and metabolism compounds within a former industrial site.

The space hosted several programs throughout its life. It used to be a small housing unit for the local workers, which ended up being converted into a storage room by a telecom-company till we took it for transformation. 

The ambition is to transform a residual-looking construction into a suitable workspace for eight people. The space design is inspired by the building’s industrial past. The selection of raw untreated materials, the visible arrangement of the technical systems, the design of specific furniture and the aperture of bigger openings in façade are the four strategies that we followed. The result is an economical, multifunctional wide office with lots of natural light and passive acclimatisation.

The project is located in Kuaichang, a small ethnic village of Tongren County in the southwestern China’s province of Guizhou. This uncharted place of no more than 100 inhabitants lies on the foothills of the Buddhism holy Mount Fanjing, named UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018.

Our site is positioned on the top of a hillside next to several agricultural fields. The village extends below winding the river, covered with a black blanket of roof tiles that fades away into the valley. We find inside five traditional structures slated for demolition. Two old houses and three livestock constructions. These are instead recovered into one covered patio. It becomes the project’s heart.

By following occupancy and expansion restrictions and fostering local growing systems of aggregation, the ring arises. A minimum wall, a vivid boundary between the longstanding houses and the mountain. Visitors inhabit the edge, architecture blends with its adjacent surroundings creating unexpected living situations. Ancient melds with new, the inside with the outside. The memories of the old occupants connect with those of the new tenants. Landscape and architecture merged into one.

** Yours Yard Hotel and Yours Yard Cabin are part of the rural development project of Fanjing Mountain. A collaborative framework between mono office, the local government and YY investors to protect and preserve the local identity of the region by proposing new design models of sustainable regeneration.

We were asked to design the infrastructure required to hold Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT)’s students yearly show. Six groups of scholars divided into fifteen teams.

Our proposal is inspired by the school’s workshops; spaces that are actively colonized and mutated by students as part of their creative processes.

We present a family of objects that respond to each of the graduate’s requirements. These objects configure together a big changing stage. An ordered chaos, where the natural use of each of the pieces undergoes different mutations. A table suddenly becomes a bench, a flower pot, a shelter or even a platform to walk on. The flexible design system allows elements such as stairs, ramps, tripods, signage, screens or projectors to be added. It is the arrangement of all the individual components together what creates a single piece of architecture with sense of collectivity. 

What was a priori an ephemeral project with very high waste rate, becomes a reusable and sustainable proposal. 

Is This Tomorrow? takes as its model Whitechapel Gallery’s landmark exhibition This Is Tomorrow (1956), featuring experimental propositions from some of today’s leading architects and artists responding to issues we face in the 21st century.

Together with the prestigious artist Cao Fei we present a discourse on digital form and digital identities studying how consumers obsessed by becoming part of the digital world are adapting themselves and their environments to a technological society. The result is a device that we called EVA 01 TOTEM.

Its design is inspired by the way telecom infrastructures disrupt both our urban and natural environments. Following each user requirements, different components are stacked on top of each other creating a totem. As a threshold between the visible and the non-visible realms, our device is thought to be extensively modified and contaminated during time. Our interest lies in the forms, spaces, and personal fictions that people create every day through the interaction with EVA. The way they use their physical environment to perform new functions related to the technological world.

Located on the northeast outskirts of Beijing in the heart of Jiangfu Park is today this massive industrial complex that once witnessed the important manufacturing activity of the city. This 100.000 sqm network of old warehouses still reflects the Sino-Soviet relationships that built the identity of the new communist nationalism.

The competition aims to regenerate the abandoned heritage, shifting production content from industrial to cultural to reflect the city’s economic and social changes. We approach planning from the scale of architecture, understanding the project as a catalogue of solutions that can be replicated across similar typologies. 

Our initial strategy starts by keeping the pre-existing volumes as containers. These suffer partial modifications to create new accesses or bigger openings for lighting and ventilation. Architecture colonizes the inside of the old warehouses with a secondary skeleton, which reinforces the damaged structure and gives new life to the space. The new different “programme-roofs” are stacked on top of these structures. Each of those is designed based on specific requirements.

The result is an architecture that emphasises the identity of the site, while shaping a new iconic industrial landscape for the city. This toolkit presents a new approach to urban regeneration within the particular context of China, where the required speed of design thinking and construction challenges the urgent need for new design models able to put in value the culture of the place.

Nave 10 is a pilot project for Langyuan’s regeneration planning at Jiangfu Industrial Park. It is one of the three pieces that conform the Cultural Center. Nave 10 is the library.

The whole programme is arranged in a central piece. Like a creature with many legs this two-story structure runs freely throughout the space, touching the pre-existence at different points. A continuous ETFE roof sifts natural light inside the space, allowing the growth of many local tree and plant species inside.

Architecture and nature blend together constructing a new urban ecosystem.

As part of Cao Fei’s Blueprints exhibition (Serpentine Gallery, London, 2020) we were asked to design an immersive installation to hold the artist’s most ambitious project yet: HX.

HX compiles four years of research at Jiuxianqiao neighbourhood, visualizing a complex community strata rapidly disappearing due to unbridled modernization. Our room is inspired by the Hongxia theatre, now converted into the artist’s studio workshop. We took some fragments from its architecture, faithfully mirroring the scars of its skin.

The inside is designed to entirely eliminate the viewer’s depth perception, having the artist’s work as the only tangible spatial reference: archive material, some furniture and her VR work. The result is a place for the boredom, where users can connect with analog and digital fragments of Jiuxianqiao community.

The second intervention for Yours Yard hotel takes place at Tongren’s region, in the southwestern China’s province of Guizhou. A small village of no more than 100 inhabitants lying on the foothills of the Buddhism holy Mount Fanjing, named UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018.

Forests of cedar and bamboo along with ancient tree species ageing older than 200 years serve as backdrop for our project. An idyllic landscape in constant change, subdued by immense screens of mist and fog that gobble it all up.

In response to local regulations of environmental protection and seeking to put in value the identity of the area it was decided to refurbish an old cedar wooden house, which becomes the starting point for our design proposal. We outline an individual living module for the hotel, used to colonize some of the village’s old traditional structures. We find again a dialogue between ancient and contemporary. An old roof’s extension with a new metal shadow groups the four new pieces with the pre-existence.

A mutated vernacular architecture arises.

Working process. We placed a laser scanner on the street. Mounted on a tripod, the 30-centimeter-squared device could scan its surroundings up to a distance of 350 meters. We went on to place the scanner at a total of 36 different locations.
